Preliminary Goals & Objectives

 

These preliminary goals and objectives were developed by members of the Advisory Committee during discussions held at the second meeting in November.

 

Transportation Plan Mission Statement:

Establish a Safe and Efficient, Multi-modal Transportation System that Supports Enhanced Regional Economic Development.

Goal 1:     Provide a safe and efficient transportation system.

                  Objectives

         Improve traffic flow within the US 50 (Main Street) corridor through Bridgeport, with specific focus on:

-         Virginia Avenue

-         Center Street

-         Philadelphia Avenue

          Evaluate the potential impacts of a southern bypass of Bridgeport to improve the linkage between I-79 and US 50 to the east.

          Improve access between US 50 and Old Route 50 in the Bridgeport hill area.

          Provide improved access between US 50 and the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

          Establish a prioritized listing of improvements that also incorporates maintenance of the current systems.

 

Goal 2:     Provide a transportation system that supports 

                 regional economic development.

 

                   Objectives

          Incorporate expansion and service improvement plans from Benedum Airport into the transportation planning activities.

          Include the CSX railroad in the transportation planning efforts.

          Coordinate the recommendations from the US Route 19 Study with corridor  improvement efforts underway in Marion County.

          Evaluate the need and impacts of improvements along the US 50 corridor to enhance flow through and accessibility to the county. 

          Emphasize connectivity of the County to the larger region through focusing on I-79, US 50, US 19, Route 279 and Benedum Airport.

          Expand transit service within the county and evaluate potential service enhancements to adjacent counties.

 Goal 3:     Provide a transportation system that coordinates and connects all modes of travel (passenger automobile, transit, pedestrian, bicycles, other non-motorized modes, rail, air and freight movement).

                   Objectives

          Incorporate expansion and service improvement plans from Benedum Airport into the transportation planning activities.

          Include the CSX railroad in the transportation planning efforts.

          Incorporate to the extent feasible, trail connections/linkages along US 19 and US 50 corridors to connect various parts of the county.

          Focus on support facilities such as transit stops, trail rest areas, etc. in evaluating alternate mode enhancements.

          Incorporate, to the extent feasible, trail linkages to other counties in the region, including Jacksons Mill in Lewis County.

 Goal 4:     Provide a transportation system that balances transportation service with potential impacts to the surrounding physical and social environment.

                   Objectives

          Include a review of environmental and land use impacts as evaluation factors in review of potential improvement concepts.

          Improve accessibility of employment opportunities within the county for residents through focusing on all modes of travel.

 Goal 5:     Provide a transportation planning process that is open and promotes involvement from all stakeholders.

                   Objectives

          Provide numerous opportunities for public and other stakeholder involvement throughout the planning period.

          Hold public presentations at locations throughout the county.
